Owon TDS8204 Review

Oscilloscopes are critical pieces of equipment to have when working with circuits that need testing or debugging and with automobiles that need maintenance and testing. A machine that is going to provide reliable results is key to a successful project. Owon has developed the TDS8204 as a versatile option and it has many great features that we are going to explore.

Owon TDS8204 4-Channel Touchscreen Digital Serial Oscilloscope

Owon TDS8204

The Owon TDS8204 is a 4-channel digital oscilloscope. It features a 200 MHz bandwidth and has up to a 2 GSa/s real-time sampling rate. Its record rate is 7.6 M. The waveform capture rate is 50,000 wfms/s and it features waveform zooming, both horizontally and vertically, as well as saving. Its FFT points include length and resolution variables.

The Owon TDS8204 comes up a bit short when compared to the Siglent SDS1104X-E when it comes to record rate as the Siglent has a maximum rate of 14 M. However, the Siglent only offers 100 MHz bandwidth to the Owon’s 200 MHz. Both are 4-channel oscilloscopes.

The oscilloscope features a simple 8-inch high-definition LCD display with a resolution of 800 x 600 pixels. This allows for excellent wave extremely easy to read, especially when considering high volume of data or many waves being covered synchronically. Also, it has multiple communication interfaces that allow for USB, VGA, and LAN.

This device is an excellent option for many tasks, including education, training, design, manufacture, electronic circuit debugging, circuit testing, and automobile maintenance and testing.

It offers 20 types of automatic measuring and 4 reference waveform memories. The time base has a range from 2 ns/div to 100 s/div.

However, this scope is limited in the fact that it only supports the Windows operating system. Mac users will not be able to connect their computers to the oscilloscope for further analysis or diagnosis of problems.

Measurements can be sent directly to USB storage, or directly to a Windows PC using the available USB connectors. You have the option of storing the measurements as binary data or as screenshots.

Additionally, if you use less than three channels at the same time, you can double the sampling rate of the first channels. This means that with 3 or more channels actively in use at the same time, the sampling rate is only 1 GSa/s.

The maximum input voltage is 400 V. Vertical sensitivity is 2 mV/div to 10 V/div. Rise time at the input is no greater than 1.7 ns.

The unit weighs 1.5 kg and has dimensions of 380 x 180 x 115 mm, making it adequate for your benchtop workspace.

It comes with PC software, 4 probes, 1 USB cable, a quick guide, and a power cord.

Recommendation

It is very clear that the Owon TDS8204 offers many excellent features. It provides you with 4 channels that can be operated concurrently, 20 different automatic measurement options, and the ability to directly connect to a Windows PC for further analysis and diagnosis of the problem you are investigating.

Because of all these great features and this oscilloscope’s reliability, we recommend it to professionals. It is an advanced piece of equipment that will get the job done, getting to the root of the problem quickly and easily displaying the results.
