OWON HDS272S vs Hantek 2D72 Review

An oscilloscope, waveform generator, and multimeter are all excellent and necessary tools to have when diagnosing electrical issues. Having all three tools in one compact portable unit is a dream come true. There are two very good options, the OWON HDS272S and the Hantek 2D72. We are going to make a recommendation based on project needs.

OWON HDS272S

OWON HDS272S

The OWON HDS272S is a handheld oscilloscope featuring a 3.5-inch LCD. The LCD is high-contrast color and is perfect for outdoor use.

It has a 70 MHz bandwidth and is a 20000 counts resolution multimeter. As an oscilloscope, waveform generator, and DMM, it features 3-in-1 capabilities that make it suitable for automobile maintenance and power detection. It is a 2-channel oscilloscope with 1 channel for a generator.

The unit has a 18650-lithium battery with comprehensive power consumption that is less than or equal to 3 W. It can work continuously for up to 6 hours.

With its USB Type-C interface, it supports both a power bank and PC software connection. Additionally, it features a self-calibration function. It is SCPI supported, which means it facilitates secondary development.

This oscilloscope has a sample rate of 125 MSa/s. Its record length is 8 K. The waveform refresh rate is 10,000 wfrms/s.This model offers two acquisition models, normal and peak detect.

Input coupling is DC, AC, and ground. The maximum input voltage is 400 V. Bandwidth limit is 20 MHz.

On the multimeter side of things, it can test capacitance, current, diode, resistance, voltage, and continuity. It has a maximum input voltage of 750 V AC and 1000 V DC.

When using the waveform generator, the device offers several output forms, including sine, square, ramp, pulse, and arbitrary.

The OWON HDS272S features low noise when handling small signals. Its readings are extremely accurate. The downside is that it’s only built for Windows so if you’re a Mac user, you’ll have to settle for not using the device in combination with a computer.

Hantek 2D72

Hantek 2D72

The Hantek 2D72 is another handheld oscilloscope that is combined with a multimeter and waveform generator, featuring 2 channels. The sample rate is 250 MSa/s when using one channel and 125 MSa/s when using both.

The multimeter has 4000 counts resolution and measures the standard scales like capacitance, resistance, diode, voltage, current, and continuity.

The oscilloscope has a bandwidth of 70 MHz or 40 MHz. It features 20 types of automatic measurements, cursor measurement, waveform printing and saving options, REF and math functions, and pass/fail functions.

The waveform generator offers several output forms, including sine, trapezoidal, square, triangle, and others up to 25 MHz.It’s able to draw and output arbitrary waveforms through the use of PC software.

Additionally, the device is powered by rechargeable batteries, so you don’t have to worry about constantly replacing them. The battery itself is a 18650-lithium battery.

When compared to the OWON HDS272S, the Hantek 2D72 has a smaller LCD screen at only 2.8 inches. The OWON HDS272S offers more memory as well as faster waveform updates. The Hantek 2D72, however, features a faster square wave reading. Like the OWON HDS272S, the Hantek 2D72 is restricted to the Windows operating system.

The Hantek2D72 also features a durable case that allows for strong impact and heat resistance. Additionally, it has a 45-degree suspension bracket that will allow you to prop it up any place you need to work.

Its record length is a maximum of 6 K for one channel and 3 K for dual channels.

Our Recommendation

While both devices offer excellent features, the OWON HDS272S is more advanced with a larger screen, more memory, and faster waveform updates. However, it is limited by its inability to work with iOS.We recommend this for professionals who need all three tools but are looking for the convenience of the 3-in-1 aspect or don’t have the space for a full-size oscilloscope.

On the other hand, the Hantek 2D72, while slightly less impressive than the OWON HDS272S, still offers excellent features with a durable case, 20 types of oscilloscope measurements, and multiple waveform generator outputs. However, it, too, is limited in its incompatibility with iOS. We recommend this device as a second choice for professionals who need the 3-in-1 benefits.
